I've had the pan off my '77 F150 4x4 with 351M and swapped in new main and rod shells and rear seal and oil pump and all I did was get the truck up by parking rear wheels on some wheels layed over on sides and raising the front and setting a pair of stout stands under the frame and letting axle drop, and I undid pan hard bar at frame mount only.
I undid one main cap at a time, never did let crank drop in relation to the block, used something to push on plain end of shell and simply slid the old one out and slid new one in above crank. I don't recall a problem with rear main, it may be that I just replaced lower half .... that was 1992.
