Leaky Rear Main Seal
How hard is it to change just a rear main seal on one of these motors while it is still in the vehicle? Has anyone done it with success? Mine is in a 78 4x4. When I redo the clutch, I want to replace the seal. Mine started leaking right after the rebuild, but it is not bad enough to warrant going in there just for that. Thanks.
2) remove lower shock bolts
3) Jack up truck at least 9" more
now you'll have enough clearance between the oil pan and front axle
4) remove pan
5) remove rear main cap
6) r&r rear main
7) reverse steps
Hope that helps
Let the truck set with out running for a few hours before you tear into it, perferably over night, then the oil will drain out of the block - unless you LIKE oil dripping in your face.

When it came to the oil pan gasket, I used weather strip adhesive and glued the gasket to the block, then you don't have the gasket moving around on you.
Don't forget to torque the bearing cap.
