first time diesel owner, looking for any info you guys have!
hello, first time in this sub section. just bought a 96 F350 super cab with a 5 speed 7.3
it is a 359k miles truck. pulls amazing. just hauled a 17000 pound boat from new york to south carolina.
looking at doing preventive maintenance and upgrades as i do.
the turbo smokes until it is warmed up and there is an oil leak that comes and goes from below the power steering pump. goes away as it warms up.
first plans is to fix the oil leak of course.....anyi deas? does it sound like a normal problem?
second is the turbo, either a factory rebuild or upgrade?
i know i need supporting mods if i do an different turbo.
stage 2 injectors, plan on interooling it either , and a good tuner/programmer.
is there other things that i need to address first? what would be a good tuner and turbo combination?
my main goal is to gain torque without killing fuel. i get 16-17 highway unloaded doing 70. would liketo stay close to that if i can.
any other important information that i should know will be taken gratefully.
i am great with gas engines but totally new to diesel

Don't mod anything until the maintenance and general repairs are completed. Make the truck run the best it can first. With that being said there are some mods that double as maintenance ie. air filter/intake.
Here's probably as much reading as you can handle:

With special emphasis on these two:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...rogrammer.html
Here's the owner's manual:

Here's the shop manual:
1996 Bronco/F-Series Workshop Manual
There's also a diesel owner's supplement manual that I can't find right now.
Welcome and have fun!

Hi Tony,
Welcome to the OBS Powerstroke section. Sounds like you got yourself a good one. The oil leak you're describing sounds to me to be a leaky oil cooler. It's an inexpensive fix (about $70 worth of seals and gaskets) but it is a messy process.
Here are three threads that go over the process in detail. Like I said, it's not an expensive fix, just messy and getting the thing in and out of the truck can be a challenge the first time you do it.

You'll probably want to do this before you get fresh coolant or oil in it, since a flush of both would be a good idea after this repair. Good luck!

Lots of good reading in those links. will keep you busy for a while. Something small, especially if you pay cash for fuel. Save your receipts. I pumped two tanks of poor/dirty fuel, that caused serious damage. Luckily Sheetz backed their product (after a few months of hassle) and wrote a 6K check to fix everything.
Enjoy it- I love that you can purchase a 300K plus milage truck that can pull like a brand new one, and looks a lot better IMO
