Installing injectors on the 7.3

Do you really need the special tool to re-install injectors?

I just put some in at the end of August but I just pushed them in by hand and then tapped in with a soft rubber mallet. And not hard by any means, just light tapping.

But I keep having the injectors blow the lower o-ring and we have figured out that the injector wasn't seated properly. So I am going to pull them, install new orings and copper washers and reinstall. Just wondering if the special tool that I saw on alldatadiy was what I needed.

I will order this tomorrow

Thanks for the help

Push them in, put a small block of wood on top of the injector, tap with a rubber mallet until seated. Check all 4 across with a level to make sure they are all seated evenly.

Make sure to use Motorcraft o-rings only.

That is all you ever need to know.

I have never used a special tool. I do use a appropriate sized wire brush to make sure the cups are clean before installing the injectors. I also soak the injectors in a tub of motor oil so they go in nice and easy. To tap them into place, I slide the hold down clamp over the upper bolt and then use a hammer and short length of wooden dowel to tap on the lower portion of the hold down clamp...(where the lower bolts goes). Just a few very light taps and they go right into place.

I don't bang on the solenoids at all. They can be a bit fragile so I tap on the clamp instead. When you are all finished, use a straight edge and check that all the solenoids are on the same plane.

I saw a video where somebody got on the end of the injector bracket with a 5/8" open-end wrench and just pried down - worked like a charm... for him. I use a dead-blow (gently) until I can get the top bolt over the bracket, then I use a socket extension on the bracket to knock it the rest of the way down.

It's your labor, time, and money. Let us all know how that turns out.

I tried those once. Lost the same o-ring on all 8 injectors within 400 miles. Ended up stranded on the side of the road with about 6 quarts of oil remaining in the pan. Fun times.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what happened to only end up with 6 quarts in the pan?

Oil pressure , much higher than fuel pressure , can pump oil to the fuel tank through the return line . I have seen that first hand .

Yes use only motorcraft O-rings. Even the dealer isn't that bad if you need them now. Other wise order them from Riffraff Diesel he's great to do business with. I use the 5/8 wrench method and it worked just fine. It sounds like it was the type of O-rings you used that caused your problem. Good luck this time.

Oil in the fuel. It happens. Fuel economy went up for a short while
