Tool Tray original liner

For a 1951 F-1, what was the original liner or padding, if any, in the tool tray above the gas tank. The truck I inherited from my uncle (original owner) has a jute padding of some sort, but don't know if he added that or if it came from the factory.
Thanks,
Bill

As far as I know there was no liner. I've had 17+ trucks and.none had liner.

I'm not aware of any kind of lining in them from the factory. Likely it was placed there by your uncle because he didn't like the sound of the stuff rattling around back there while driving.

Concur with both Bob and Wayne. I have never heard of a liner, and have not seen one in the parts book.

A liner of some type is a good idea though. I know I have gotten tired of all the rattles from behind me when I am driving.

The rattles behind the seat are offset by the rattles in the rest of the truck

I guess it is a question of proximity. With my hard of hearing, the ones behind the seat irk hell out of me. The farther the rattle is away, the less annoying it is.

Of course, if my hearing gets any worse, the bed may fall off the truck, and I'll never notice.

I used a piece of black carpet runner to line it, the ribbed stuff sold at Lowe's and HD, etc. I ran it front-to-back in one piece, it hooks on the beads at top. No noise whatsoever. Easy to remove and clean.

Thats a good idea Ross. Quiets the noise, and saves the paint too. I have yet to line mine with anything, the back glass began leaking some years ago, and I was always having to mop up the mess (amazingly, it didn't rust out the tray, or the floor). Put a new back glass in this past summer, but did not use any butyl. Began seeping a little around the glass joint (not the cab) awhile back. Going out to my boss's heated pole barn tomorrow and taking the glass out and sealing it. Will have to put refinishing the tray on my list after tomorrow, and lining the thing.

Thanks for the replies. Apparently there was no original lining. There is an empty tool bag under the seat that might of originally been in the tool tray, providing a little nose cushioning.

This begs another question: Was there an original tool bag and what did it look like? I'm guessing mine is canvas about 18-20" long, 10" tall with tie straps. No visible brand or markings.

I'm still finding interesting things in uncle Duey's truck. In addition to the tool bag under the seat, there is what appears to be his WWI rain coat, all stiff and crunchy.

Google Lin Stacey. He reproduces the bags and has correct tool lists. He may be able to send you a picture for comparison.
