question about MAF sensor on 6.2L

why does the MAF sensor on the 6.2L a two piece? I was changing the air filter today and tried to remove the first fitting and all that exposes is the wires going into the back of the actual connector. I then tried to remove the front part of the connector from the MAF and couldn't get that off either so I had to cut the harness loose from where it attaches to the bottom of the airbox to get enough slack to get everything apart.

Another question, how much pulling can the wires going into the terminal section of the connector take before they pull apart? Reason I ask is because when I was moving things around while changing the filter out I noticed I had run out of slack in the MAF wiring harness and had pulled enough on it that the lockdown clip for the rear portion of the connector had broke and it was pulling/twisting on the wires that were going into the backside or terminal end of the connector. I held it together tight and wrapped it with electrical tape to keep moisture out and keep it tight like it was when the snap lock was still intact.

Do you think there will be any issues with the connector after this? The wires go pulled on pretty good, but it doesn't appear that any were pulled out farther than they should be.The part of the connector that actually locks into the MAF wasn't moved, just the back portion that keeps the wires from being pulled out from the rear. I took the truck out and drove it afterwards and it runs fine with no CEL or anything.

I miss the filter setup on '05 F150 with the 5.4, all you had to do was pop two clips off and slide the filter out the front of the housing.

A month old, but you're right...this clip seems to be a poor design considering you must remove it to get the airbox cover off. I was able to get it off, but broke one side of the clip in the process. This was probably 8 months ago, no issues since.
