I read on some other posts that the back up lights are controlled by the neutral safety switch if the truck is an automatic. Just asking a dumb question here but that means if I have no back up lights I need to replace that switch or is it out of adjustment or what? The PO said he was told he had to take the steering column apart so he mounted a flip switch under the dash. Its really ugly and I'd like to get rid of it.

You don't have to take the column apart. If it's still a Bump column and nobody has graphed in a Dent column the switch is mountad to the top of the column down low close to the floor. The b/up lamps do go through it.
If you are going to replace it you might mark the current switch's location so when you install the new one you can install it in the old switch's Adjusted location. This way your column's PARK and NEUTRAL will also be the new switch's PARK and NEUTRAL.
