I spent some time reading old posts this morning but still have questions. Last Saturday the starter quit engaging on Leigh. (The 66). It started that morning and just as the engine fired I thought I heard a strange noise that of course quit as soon as I released the key. When I got to the dump however the starter just spun, wouldn't engage the engine. We pushed it a couple feet in gear ( Manual tranny) and then the starter engaged and started the engine. Now, back in the yard and it just spins. In my head, since turning the engine helped, I have a flywheel tooth broken and turning the motor past it worked, but what are the odds it would stop in that position every time? I roll started the truck once, then parked and shut off and again the starter only spins.
Thoughts? I would like to try replacing the starter myself if that is most likely the problem.
You could have issues there, further testing is required. Maybe some of the other guys will have a different thought. I believe there may be an inspection plate that you can view the flywheel.
If you need your truck you will need to get on it but, if not you might do more testing.
Just make sure the wheels are chocked well on the truck.
to me it sounds like the bendix drive has given up in the starter if it were me I would pull the starter and look in the hole and see if there are teeth missing on that spot on the fly wheel but sounds more like a bad bendix or just a starter problem
Finally had time and good weather all in one weekend! Got the old starter off and the teeth were GONE! Haha. The looked plum beveled. Picked up a new one at NAPA and had Leigh back on the road 20 minutes later.
