I own several Ford trucks, F600 LP, 2 F450 all 1990's one F250 ,1984 all Diesel's and a 1984 F150 4.9 gas. I have some other trucks also, the reason I joined here is. I inherited my dad and mothers 1987 F150, 4.9 fuel injected, 3 speed AT. 68000 actual miles. This truck is in good shape, it just has a few issues. One is the dash function cable and the fuel mileage. It seems from what I have read so far I need to take the dash apart and check out this cable. It is still connected just out of adjustment. The truck only gets about 13 miles to the gallon of gas. I think something is out of wack there. I have had a full tune-up and it still is no better. This truck idles fast also. I personally think on long trips I should be able to get 19 to 20 miles / gallon and it should idle slower. Have yet to take it to the Ford garage and have them put the computer on it. Don't really want to pay that bill just yet. Hoping this winter to work on it. The only problem is I don't have a shed to put it in to work on it. Also I am new to these kind of sites so not sure where I am going here.
First off hello. Secondly welcome. Personally I think 20 mpg may be setting your sights a bit high with my 84 4.9 A/T and never got much better then 16 mpg. The gov site has it listed 14/17 combined at 15. Gives you a start point at any rate .
I installed high side wall tires on this truck this summer and if I could get 16 mpg high way driving that would be good. With all the tune up work I am lucky to get 13mpg
