gas mileage

I have a 2006 F150 King Ranch. I purchased it new and have a little over 3000 miles on it. I'm getting around town 11 miles to the gallon and 13 on the high way. Will the mileage get better after I put more miles on it? I had a 2001 F150 that did allot better with the gas milage.

There have been a lot of milage postings. The trucks seem to differ a lot ... more than they should.

Yesterday I was driving ~250 miles. I had several different speed zones so I reset my mileage indicator in each one to understand what the truck was really doing. Each of these scenarios was 'best case' in that I was already up to speed and cruse control set. The terrain was very flat so only minor hills. I went at least 20 miles at each speed. Here is what I got. These numbers surprised me:

o 55 = 21.2 MPG
o 60 = 20.7 MPG
o 65 = 18.2 MPG
o 70 = 17.7 MPG
o 75 = 15.8 MPG

It falls off fast. I did not do a similar low speed -- around town -- kind of test, but I usually get ~13.5 ish.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

Do you have a 6 cylinder? The mileage you are getting is way more then my 5.4 3 valve is getting. I don't know any one with a F150 like mine getting miles like that. May be my computer is wrong, I should calculate the old fashion way.

I would never trust the computer to give correct readings. Some simple math at the pump should give you the true number. Also, how do you drive? Whats the terrain like? What octane do you burn? What cab configuration do you have? I am getting ~15mpg combined out of my 06 Screw with winter fuel. Depending on where you live, you could also be experiencing the "Winter fuel" effect. The formulations that they put out for the winter always decrease mileage.

I agree with WheelMA1. Winter driving conditions, winter fuel at the pumps and personnal habits behind the wheel all make us get a little different MPG. In my SCREW I usually can post 18mpg during summer months going to work and back. I just checked my mileage on a 622 mile trip, averaging about 75 the entire way--going over with a 35 mph head wind I got 12.5. Coming back with a nice tail wind I got just over 14. This is all on 87 octan. I usually run 88 octane but not any higher as I have not won the Powerball yet.

All my readings were off the on-board computer and the very best case scenario. The road was very flat (eastern part of Virginia). I was up to speed with cruise set. I simply hit the reset button on the computer and then checked it 15 - 20 minutes later. More than anything, I was just trying to understand the milage penality for speed ... that and I was really board ... and I just happen to be on a highway (55mph), then a low speed interstate (60mph), and then a high speed interstate (70mph).

These numbers do not reflect any kind of real life driving ... but are more casually interesting data.

I have the 04 5.4 Screw 4x4. I am burning 87.

I think you guys are right about winter driving. I let the truck warm up until the heat starts and I never thought about that. Spring is tomorrow and hope to drive in warmer temperatures soon. Only have 3000 miles on the King Ranch and all the miles are Winter driving. Thanks for the feed back.

A few of my buddies have found this out. The worst that I have seen was a Chev 1500HD 4X4 CC short box 6.0L, the computer was telling us 13 mpg and actual was 9.something. My buddy was kinda, pissy about that.

My mpg increased after 5000 miles or so I also saw a good increase when I installed a tonneau cover. the magnaflow sido exhaust and drop in K&N filter helped also. I average 16mpg plus just normal driving to work or country roads quite hilly to her in Ma /souther NH. I think we still have the winter mix gasoline here which I believe gives lower MPG

Wife's 05 F150 S'crew with 5.4, 4wd and 3.73 averages right at 13.5mpg (calculated manually and has since it was new. It's gotten as low as 10.5 in thw winter in 4wd and as high as 18 on a long highway trip in OD on mostly flat road. But the day to day mpg is a little over 13.

We are bummed about that-expected to see about 15-ish average but otherwise it's a great truck so what can u say.

The real bummer is that my 6800lb 4wd F250 supercab 6.8L V10/3.73s & 33" tires averages 11.5mpg and can see as high as 14+ on the highway!

I had a 2000 f150 flareside 5.4 4x4 which consistently got 13.8 - 14.0 in mixed driving. 2006 f150 4x4 with 4.6 gets about 15 in same driving patterns. My neighbor has a 2003 f150 screw with a volcano and K&N air filter and he gets 14. I think he is contemplating more modifications for fractions of mpg more. Maybe if I cut of my catalytic converter and throw my backseat and spare tire in the garage I'll see 16 mpg

Welcome to FTE bbranky. Cutting the cat off these new vehicles will actually cause them to run worse, since they are more computer controlled than ever. The best mods for mileage gains are a tonneau cover, and a good muffler swap, or catback kit.
