Will a worn ip cause hard start cold? Fast idle solenoid is missing from pump i assume. No plunger to increase throttle on side of pump. Replaced injectors, caps, lines, bad gps. Manual button on gps. 9+ volts on all gp connectors. Two 31 batteries. Fires instant when hot with no gp cycle time.
I use to have to crank and crank to start my 6.9L when cold. The glow plugs were fine. Once I changed the injection pump and injectors all was fine. I did do the return lines as well. I don't believe they were leaking that bad but the truck did seat a long time between starts.
if it is high mileage ip, maybe, or someone could have messed with fuel settings, and or the timing, if you don't have a tach you can't be certain of the rpm of the power loss. is it NA or turbo? type of turbo makes a difference also. to much fuel and no turbo is bad, lots of smoke and no power.
on your push button system are you using the current limiting resistor, it is the metal strip bent in a zz shape on the latter model GP controller. to limit the current to the gps? and what type of GP? zd9 are a low voltage gp and are meant to used with a resistor, and a feed back type controller, 8 seconds should be long enough. with no high idle, solenoid it may be necessary to step on throttle some when starting, is your advance system working? at approx. 124 degrees the advancer should turn off. the lack of advance may make it start harder.
Yes, a worn IP can cause hard cold starts. Mine didn't want to start last winter. GP system was fully functional and operating correctly. IP had 125k on it. This winter I have a new IP/injectors and it will start without being plugged in down to 19* (so far). This is without the cold advance plugged in.
You could check your pump timing. If it is retarded it can make cold starts harder. Also insure that your batteries, cables and starter is good. They can really effect how fast the engine turns over when it is cold out.
