OverDrive Button Not working Shift'n while driving
Ive got a 99 F350 Dually with the auto.
Ever since i bought the truck (used last year) the "off" light on the over drive button never worked. I never really thought about it until last night i started the truck up and it was on. I cant get the truck to go into over drive. If you shut the truck off and back on it sometimes works. I was driving last night and the OD just kicked off while i was crusing down the highway. I smacked the switch a couple times and it kicked back in.
I guess the question is can i replace the gear shift lever with the OD button and slap it in? What does it take to install one? I Build rock crawlers so i know my way around the garage but im not used to working on pretty vehicles.
I have 99 250 and I bought it used also, I noticed that sometimes I have to pull the shifter back towards me and wiggle it possibly to get the light or for the switch to work and other times it works as advertised. since I know that I am not worried about fixing it since it is not that big of a deal and I dont tow often.
According to the Ford shop manual, you have to pull the ignition lock cylinder (easy job), pull the shrouding around the upper column, (another easy job), and pop the pin that holds the shift lever and disconnect the wire from the switch. Anyone with some mechanical aptitude should be able to do it.

Good post....There is a TSB about the wires for the switch chaffing or braking just below were they come out of the shifter lever in the column.
thanks guys thats what it sounds like. i swapped out the actual button on the end of the shifter and that didnt fix it. ill pull the colum apart and see what happens.
