I have an 01 Explorer 5.0 AWD. I'm sure that means nothing for the question.
I have an intermittent problem of both mirrors going dead. I'm guessing a broken wire in the drivers side door harness at the hinge. Had a window break there.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the mirrors? Kind of like to know what color wires I'm looking for.
Also if you have another typical this is what broke or place to look, by all means I'm listening.
You don't really need a diagram, as any broken wire you find needs to be fixed. Open the door and carefully slide the harness boot out of the way between the door jamb and the door to expose the wires. Use a small hook tool (preferably) or similar tool to grab one wire at a time and tug on it moderately hard. You need to pull hard because usually the copper breaks first and leaves some of the insulation still connected. This would explain your intermittent symptom. A broken wire will be obvious. Repair it with a weatherproof crimp connector.
9 times out of 10 the 4 way switch is giving you problems. Remove it don't open the switch get all the 2-26 or WD-40 in it you can then operate it in all positions many times. Now put it back in if you are lucky it will work fine in some cases it may take 24 hours to get back to proper operation. A coating builds up on the contacts from lack of use I have taken the switch apart and cleaned and lubed the contacts with good luck. (Not Recommended)
