Best way out???
Last July an injector failed. Diesel shop told me injector failed open, hydrolocked #1 cylinder, bent exhaust valves and push rods and broke 2 rocker arms. I waited 3 months for the rocker arms (backordered from Ford). My mechanic got it all back together with 8 new OEM injectors. Fired it up and it was idleing at 2000rpm and running rough. After 3 minutes it did not clear up and he shut it down. A little while later he tried to start it up again and it was seized.... He pulled the glow plugs and tried to turn it over by hand. Very hard to turn by hand and has a squeaking noise. He thinks something is now wrong in the lower end of the motor. The tips of all 4 glow plugs on the left side were melted off. These plugs had only about 2000 miles on them.
After the $5000+ that I have already put into this thing I now need to replace the motor.
I plan to sell the truck but I don't want to sell a problem. What is my best option for a way out of this thing?
1) New crate motor is gonna run another ~$10k installed
2) Used motor with ~150k is gonna run ~ $6k installed
3) Cut my losses and sell it as is with bad motor
Which option is going to minimize my losses? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
would take a lot of fuel. What was the condition of the cylinder walls
to start with. Have you pulled one of the new injectors on that side.
Have him do it with you there and look at the O-rings and the copper
washer on the end. If you find bad O-rings or missing copper I think
that you mechanic may of screwed up.
On the sale options
#1 & #2 will get the most $ out of it and I think that #1 will get the lesser of the
two.
The #3 option would get the least but you would not have any more cash tied
up in the truck.
Then there is the question of how much do you want for the truck as it sits?
What do you plan on replacing it with? Maybe you can get a dealer to give you
a decent trade value. I know that one is a big MAYBE.

Are you going to buy another Diesel truck?
You are already out $5K added another $6K to get it running, how much can you sell it for? What about a $10K engine, will you sell it much more?

This is really tough. Cut your lost and sell it as is, if you are not going to buy another diesel struck ever again.
If you are still on with diesel truck, find a better mechanic and either rebuild the engine or put another $10K in and keep it for a while. That's $15K extra for a 135K miles with whatever amount you still borrow.

If they are as good as they say they are you may just want to hangon to that Super Duty for awhile and enjoy it.
