my 04 excursion 6.0psd started rough idle and smoking this week (cold and warm). 6-12 months ago same thing but only when cold, ran okay when warmed up. still under warranty then (not now) i took it to dealer and 3 injectors where bad. relpacement was expensive ($1200+ i was told) but only $100 under warranty. this time i ordered a code checker - it came yesterday and gave P0307, misfire cyl 7. now for my question - finally!
since no mention of injector problem could it just be the glow plug for that cyl?
i would like to save money but also know that getting in there to replace just the gp then have to go in again for the injector will cost me time. does anyone have some time i could borrow or purchase?
Sorry. Diesels don't have an injection system, they don't have a throttle body either as I understand it. This leads me to believe that with air and spark not in the equation, it must be a problem with compression or fuel. The glow plugs only warm the heads up to help start the engine, they should turn off as soon as the heads reach a certain temp.

thank you for trying to respond to this but you are absolutely wrong. diesel engines DO have fuel injectors. you should try to help people only when it is in a field you understand. get some help here: auto.howstuffworks.com/diesel2.htm
or just google 'diesel fuel injector' like i just did

I misstyped, I had meant ignition. Unless diesel spark plugs aren't just a joke. While I am not a certified mechanic, or a great typist (this time because I was thinking faster than typing), I have worked on a few diesels mostly old tractors though so I am little fuzzy on the EFI side. However, back on topic, the rest of post said the problem most likely resides in either compression or the injector. The glow plugs just heat the head to aid in the combustion. Once the head is up to temp, the combustion should keep the temperature up so the glow plugs are turned off. I don't believe the glowplug is going to be the issue, but the injector is likely.
My bet would be the injector or injection system. I think if you check around you will find that the 6.0 intection systems have been problematic at best. I had one in a f450 that would miss intermidently on different cylinders. The fix for me was sending it to through an equipment auction where I sold it and bought another with a 7.3.
