I'm in the process of building a 74/75 F-250. Here's the DL. It's a 74' frame with a '75 390 FE/C6, a '76 cab and the bed is unknown but I'm guessing a late 70's bed. I have for big issues to deal with. 1. Even on a sunny warm day it doesn't want to stay running for the first 5 min. I know 399's are notorious for being cold blooded but I don't think that's the issue.
2. My gauges won't work. None of them.
3. Belt squeal after doing a 3G alternator swap. I lined the pulley up but I'm still getting a squeal. I have a double groove pulley on the way to hopefully solve that issue.
4. Front clip body lines are crazy off (oem fenders). Also I'm having a "high hood" situation even with the hinges adjusted to the max.
Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, or advice appreciated.
Fix one problem at a time, like why it will not stay running. I personally would figure out the gauge issue first that way you can keep an eye on the important stuff like oil pressure/ eng temp.
Air, fuel and fire (spark) makes it run, ck those 3. Maybe a clogged in line filter or sending unit sock? Maybe a little confusion on the 3 G conversion? Coil going bad or loose connection somewhere.
Do you have the elec choke or a manual one? Are you sure the squeal is a belt and not the alternator itself?
Get the mechanics figure out then work on the body line issue with some patience and some adjustments, yes its a PITA. Get the doors set, then do the fenders, then the hood.
How are your rubber body mounts, dry rotted and cracked? Might be time for a new set?
Thanks for the input. I kinda forgot I had posted this on here. The double grove pulley fixed the squeak, the carb needed cleaned and tweaked. Runs pretty good now. As far as the body goes, I'm contemplating buying a 1977 f-150 2x4 that has an immaculate body, to swap to my 4x4. 77&79F250 you seem to know you way around the frame difference issues (saw your comments when attempting to find my answers). Perhaps you can give me some pointers on what all is entailed in swapping the bed. I've read about a possibility of needing to shim, obviously drill new holes, and something about adding some steel in the back for the last two bolts. As far as drilling the holes, do I just drill 2" in from center of existing bolt holes or are the bolt layouts different as far as front to back positioning? Thanks for any help in advance.
