Loud whistle?

I Have a 2005 6.0 powerstroke that recently started having a high pitched whistle at an idle. It sounds like it is behind the turbo and has some black soot on the firewall. Any ideas? Can i get to it back there or should i take it in before i mess something up?

Yep cracked Y-Pipe.

With a cold start you can feel around the turbo, joints and the flex joints for the leak.

Either way you'll need a new Y-pipe, have your current one repaired or swap in a solid Y-pipe from Sinister

Is there a reason for the flex joint section in the stock unit? What could be the downside to putting in a "solid" one?

I believe it's there for expansion and ease of installation.

The better idea is heavy duty 3 layer flex couplings versus the odd stock style flex joints.
