Took the excursion out on some of our local trails Saturday night with a local group. Had a blast until it shut down on me. Ended up just being the inertia switch, but I had got the starter so caked full of mud that it was done. I had just replaced it 4 weeks ago and was under warranty so no biggie. The Ex handled itself pretty great. Walked through everything I put in front of it. At times that was as much as 2 to 3 feet of standing water. When It went down my buddy with a land cruiser pulled me back to pavement so AAA could hook it up. Had it not been for the starter I could have kept going. Do you wheel your Ex? I know I got lots of odd looks from the normal jeep crew that we see on our trails here.
I wheeled mine once, by accident. My buddy broke his Jeep, so we and our wives decided to do La Sal pass from east to west. Bad idea. The east side is a dirt road, but the west side was steep and snow packed. With no way to back up, we decided to continue on. Another bad idea. It's really narrow at the bottom, with sagebrush sticking well out into the trail. That was an expensive lesson. I learned, though:
Has it been off pavement? Yes
4 Wheel Drive engaged? Yes
Wheeling? Nope, it's a family hauler and if I break it, I fix it. My wallet says don't do it, but the wife may also club me over the head. Since it is our number 1 family vehicle.
The first excursion i got it stuck off road in deep snow. one time it took almost an hour to get it out and i was pinned up hill against a tree and i was about 10" from hitting it. Finally got out by letting most of the air out of the tires.
If i do wheel with my current excursion i will not do it alone and it will probably be the snow only. I have had a few broncos over the years for the mud, sand and trails.
Ummm,,,,, isn't that what 4 LOW is FOR?!?!?! When we had the TH, the Ex went a lot of places out in Ridgecrest/CA city/Charlie's place that most only see on bikes and quads,,, so I had to replace a steering stabilizer and a tire, and buff it out again. I bought it w/4x4 to use it! Although, I will say I DID not take it up the hillclimb at Gorman, because it DID need to be able to tow the camper home! But don't think it wasn't on the list of options!! The wife just said NO,,, and no animals were harmed, and we went back to being kids that could drink beer!
So far Dave is in the lead I would love to take mine but I'm afraid if something brakes
At this point most of my stuff is under warranty, so if it breaks it breaks. I've done some trails a couple times, but this weekend was the first time Ive really gotten into some deeper stuff. We dont have hills or a lot of rocks here in FL, just sugar sand and mud for the most part.
I broke an air line to my auto locking hubs just before this trip and didnt realize it. i was in 2 wheel drive almost the whole weekend and still made it through most stuff. i was stuck good here though
Dave cheated, his truck is already the color of dirt haha
just hit some mud for fun...any chance to really do anything is so far out and i like to keep it clean.
now more rally style driving(got sideways a few times)...hell yeah!! 120 miles of muddy road/trail that used to be a rail road literally in the middle of nowhere! at speeds of 45-65
