Fuel smell and shuddering when start on incline
I searched for this same problem, but couldn't find a thread regarding this, so please forgive me if this is redundant. There is a smell of gas inside the cab and outside the truck. The bottom is pretty rusty, and the tank looks to have a decent amount of surface rust, but no gas is leaking out (in liquid form). Not sure if this is related, but anytime I'm on an incline, or the truck is tilted in any way, it shudders after starting, flashing check engine light, and then once it coasts to a flat surface, it will start up again. Any thoughts?

Haven't had it long enough to grab the mileage yet. The CEL doesn't stay on once it starts. Can I still pull the code on an OBD1 even if it goes away?

Yes codes are stored in the computer so it doesn't matter if the light is on or not, and pulling them can be done without any special tools following the procedure found here.. Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test.

Check wiring as well.
What year is your truck.
The older trucks with EEC and fuel relay on inner fender or behind washer bottle tend to corrode the terminals. Check grounds to make sure they are clean.
Smelling gas when it's stalling...
Does it smell gassy at idle. Even if not, pull the hose off the fuel pressure regulator and see if gas comes out while running.
Coil wires corrode also. Give the small wires a tug going into that.

I'll check the valve, thanks! Yeah, if it's tilted it starts, turns over, and then just shudders, as if it's trying really hard to stay running. I have to start it again and give it gas to get it to stay running. Once it gets going, it's bulletproof.
