2003 f150 xlt no start issue

ok i got a call from my inlaws saying their truck wouldnt start , i asked the stupid questions like is there gas in it lol well apparently it had been chugging the day before keep in mind the low fuel light is always on , and they made it home but it stalled and wouldnt start again ran out of gas i imagine he added gas but still nothing , I know with some of these trucks they have a maxi in the tank but would it clog to the point it wont allow fuel to pass ? how do you bring up dash engine fault codes any help would be great

THAT is your problem if it's fast-flashing during a starting attempt.

put the key into the ignition and turn "ON", not start... the theft light will flash for 3 seconds, then go out when the computer recognizes the key as correct.. If not, try the spare key........ at the same time the fuel pump will crank for 3 seconds and prime the fuel rail.. do you hear the pump ? There is a shrader valve on the fuel rail.. push the center pin and see if fuel squirts out.

so the fuel pump is dead AND the key THEFT light continues to flash ? Try the spare key. It wont start if the THEFT light continues to flash after 3 seconds.

Do this, turn key to On and let it that way for at least 1 minute.
Does it Theft light flash a two digit code?
If yes what is that code?
Disconnecting anything at this point does no good.
You must get a lead on the issue before you can decide what action to take.
Good luck.

It's an '03, just go into the HEC dealer test mode and read the PATS DTCs directly. They're going to be far more useful than the lamp flash codes which Ford never documented in their North American service literature.

ok so today was my first time i actually went over to the in laws to see the truck . i hooked up my scanner and NO codes to be found . yet the abs is on , anyway the theft light is flashing when the key is off thats it , not while its actually on . i have power to the injectors and to the coils , when you try and start it nothing it just cranks , he told me when he had shut the truck off it was like it was running one 1 cycl , fuel rail has fuel but imo not much , id assume 35to 60psi would be running to driving , the dash has black out syndrome so thats useless , next question . fuel driver module or pump would they bring up codes on a scanner ???

I have no idea how to get to them

Hold on now, your just jumping anywhere.
If the Pats system has a fault it will not let the motor start.
That's the idea behind the Pats system.
Don't go bypassing it trying to fix something that may not be broken.
Did I understand the Pats is flashing with the ignition off. That isn't right to begin with. With the ignition off it cuts power to these systems.
The ABS code will not be read from the engine control system. It's not a part of that system and is read from another location with a different type Scanner unless you have one that will do both..
Forget abut the ABS for now.
Get the motor to start and run smooth.
My suspicion is there is Varmint damage to the wire harness from setting.
If the dash HEC testing can be entered, it will give you codes if there is a fault.
You need documentation to Id the codes, otherwise get the flash codes and I can tell you what the system sees for a fault, same as the dash readout display tells you by the code it displays.
Leave the motor alone for now and just get the Pats to communicate with the PCM without a fault.
What your into is a learning curve along with repairs.
It's a tough way to be in because you don't know what the last owner did along with the faults and having to learn all at the same time.
Project may see it differently but that ok, you still need to, learn, at this point.
Good luck.
.

truck hasnt been sitting , it was being drove till last week when i posted , the theft light is blinking faintly with out the ignition on, i called ford but they are of no help couldnt even tell me if its normal that the theft light blinks while the truck is shut off . shouldnt the scanner still load the faults if there is some ? the dash is blacked out the numbers no longer light up , something i need to replace or fix . with out that to get the codes is there no other way ?

the faint light flashing on the dash may just be normal ......... I still don't see where you have a good feel for the fuel pressure.. Turn the key to ON, but not start.. do you hear the fuel pump run for 3 seconds ? Push the Schrader valve on the fuel rail.. It should have 30-40 psi on it and shoot out several drops of gas ... but it wont last long.. use key, crank pump again, see if you have 40 psi again.
