Standard halogen sealed beams for me. Standard GM switch from the wiring kit. I hooked the switch to a home made relay system, using standard hella relays. If one of the sealed beams burns out, I may try the new sylvania white lite (forget the brand name) bulbs, but I've read they have a short life span.
That article is a real downer. No HIDs, no lowering and no driving barefoot. I'm sure if I read more the shade of your sunglasses would be specified.
I'm not sure about the accuracy of some of the article. The FMVSS regulation cited I believe is only a standard for new vehicles. Regardless I don't believe that a safe HID can't be produced. Of course many states don't follow DOT regs to the letter. And even fewer are enforced . . . Except in the state of Virginia
