trans swap problem

I bought a 92 f150 inline 6 now with 97 5 speed. first guy said he blew the trans and found a 97 5 speed he had put in. he also said they changed something about clutch. I brought it home pulled shifter and sure enough he had cranked so hard it was just stuck. Shifts fine except when running you have to stand on clutch to get it to release. then when you let it out it slips, which I think it hasn't been releasing from the start and that's why he was cranking so hard on shifter. I'm sure slipping is just worn plate and gonna replace, but why is clutch not releasing. BTW I did replace master cylinder and bleed everything including slave. Throwout bearing seems to move pretty far watching it while someone else works clutch.
my question is could there be a small amount of difference in this trans to effect how much travel I need?
pics I could find my trans does look like a m50d. the numbers on tag are filo 75A AA C689338 if any of that helps. Thanks for any info.
also my speed cable I noticed looks like it was electric and this one has whole for mechanical.
