No start

There's a few fuzes that I think are blown, the dash lights, and front lights don't come on, but the 4x4 and clock do? And the done and brake lights.

Anyway when I try to jump it via the solenoid, it just does a half second of the starter turning. What could the cause of this be? I'm going to replace all the fuzes tomorrow and see which ones are blown.

When my tired starter finally gave up the ghost and quit it would engage and try to spin for about 1/2 a second and lock up. Maybe the starter died on you. Any idea how old it is?

I would looking at the starter. A good jump vehicle should rule out bad batteries or bad cables.

Not sure about the clutch switch. I've never messed with them but I would guess it's just a plunger style switch that completes a circuit to let it start. I'd make a direct connection with the two wires coming in and out of the switch and just bypass it. If it's try yin to start though the clutch switch isn't your problem. Make sure you test the starter under a load. My old one would run sitting on the ground but didn't have enough power to turn over the truck.

The po also thinks the ignition switch is bad.
I figure the second starter on a truck that has been siting for awhile like ten plus years then ran for a year or two then parked a few more years could need a new one.

I have two newish batteries both deep cycling 690cca
The cables could be better but don't have but a .01 resistance

So I changed a few fuzes

Also let the batteries stay connected all night, no drainage!
Now the starter spins freely, like there's nothing to catch on, but it's slow sounding, not the typical high pitch starter wind

I'd pull the starter and have it tested. If it is suspected to be bad then replace or have it rebuilt. Without a healthy starter the diesel will not crank fast enough to start. Also test for full voltage AT the starter. It could be the wire from the battery to the starter. check for good clean connections everywhere. Could be as simple as a dirty ground causing slow cranking speeds.... Everywhere... sitting up will allow for connections to get corroded and not flow enough current to work properly....

YMMV Sean

the batts need to be start type, not deep clycle. min 600 cca. deep clycle have thin plates and will gas badly and go bad much sooner. All starters for this engine are gear reduction type. there are several types, and manufactures. OEM are 3.6 KW O'Reilly's sells all three types. I just put the one with out a nose cone, (newest design) and works fantastic, spins real fast.

The starter blew the breaker on all the testers around me, along with the replacement I got from autozone.
It spins much faster, but now I have major air intrusion:/
