Exaust noise

For about 5 months now, when I first crank the truck, as engine warms up, there is a loud swooshing sound and it idles different than it used to. It's like the wastegate is opening and closing. Some mechanics I've had look at it said two different things. Something with the turbo.

Anyone know why it's doing this?

I have noticed over the past 5 months that my power and boost seems to be significantly lower than it used to be. I can't remember anything going wrong that caused it.

I had new transmission put in 3 weeks ago.

The woosh is likely the EBPV activating. You won't hear it until it's cold outside.

Well, it's been doing it even in the warm weather we had.

Just gonna throw this out, look at your up pipes and see if they might be leaking. Mine are and they are louder when cool and get less pronounced as the vehicle warms.

One of the basic things I learned on these trucks: No soot anywhere, except out the pipe from time to time. If you see soot under the hood or the truck, something's leaking.

You might have a wastegate issue, you can pull and cap the red line that goes to the turbo. Your EBPV may need service, or you may have a temperature sensor acting up. You could also have an Exhaust Back Pressure sensor/tube plugged.

I appreciate you all.

I just recently replaced the EBP sensor and tube.
Paid a tech $1,000 to fix my turbo issues or whatever it is/was. Runs the same. And he just put back together what I had taken apart and cleaned and had towed to him. Quite frustrating.

There are so many things that can cause reduced power, and the wooshing noise can describe everything from an active EBPV to a leaky intake to a 6637 air filter.

We want to help, but all we have at this point is whatever text you provide. Can you get your hands on a scan tool or a code reader? Can you post a video of the noise? Do you have any gauges that can give us a clue as to what's going on in the truck? Have you researched a boost leak detector (home-made for a few bucks)?

With the trans being out it is a very good possibility the up pipe are leaking. Especially with the mention of lower power.

I know someone else here also mentioned the same thing of a shop pulling their trans and reinstalling it and then having a up pipe leak.

I know people who had this problem and the problem was his Turbo Bolts were loose, loose enough to make the leak. One of the bolts was almost out all the way.

You may want to check all the bolts on the turbo and pedestal.

If you find the bolts are loose, the Stage 8 are good to many guys who race. And some people drill the Ford Kit Bolts and use Stainless Safety Wire.

Ford Turbo Bolt Kit, Part #C3Z-9G486-AA

or the better locking Stage 8 type,

Here is a photo of the entire electrical on the 7.3L, this is really handy when troubleshooting a problem
