whinning turbo

I have a 2011 F250 that I bought new. It's been the best truck I have ever owned. It now has about 105K miles (170k Kms). Lately the turbo has started whining at low speeds and idling.

Is this something I should be concerned about. I talked to a diesel mechanic (not Ford) and he said this is fairly common in some vehicles.

Thanks in advance.....

Gordon

Is your boost psi fine and power feel normal? Is it only when cold and does it sound like a quiet mini grinder?

Mine has had the "normal" grinding noise when cold since new but if you're just noticing it, it hasn't been doing it for long. I call it the table saw noise but it's more than a wine. For mine I would say it can only be normal because it hasn't blown apart yet with over 82,000 miles but I don't know how healthy a turbo can be if it develops that noise with over 100k.

I can't tell you what it is but I can attempt to explain what I've heard. It heard it a few weeks ago but with warmer temps I doubt I'll hear it for the next 6-7 months.

Yes sir that's what mine sounded like at 22,000 miles. Its not just the 11 and 12 models, its 11-14 models, mine being a 14. In fact it's going to the dealer on Friday, I might need another one.. As soon as mine is out of warranty I will be getting the 2015 turbo kit, which will eliminate the unreliable factory turbo. The 2015-2016 trucks have a different and much more reliable turbo.

Sometimes I get whining that comes from the back seat area, but sometimes I leave them at home.
