I've only been in the diesel world for 1 year now. I got a 99 f-250 super Duty w/ the 7.3L and I'm having a few problems. I will post them separately.
#1: oil leak. I'm having to add a few quarts between changes as I'm finding that every time I park, it drips from where its pooling up on top of my block right under the fuel filter/intake manifold.
Friend/tech says a small high-pressure oil leak.
I don't see anything "small" about it.
Could this cause a loss in power and performance?
Well it does sound like a hpop pump or the fittings that connects to the hoses. So it is something I would fix before you are dead on the side of the road. So start by cleaning the hpop which is under your fuel filter real good and see if you can see where it is leaking before driving it too far from home. Even put a clean rag or paper towel under the pump to help pin point the problem. It could be something that can be fixed. But depending on miles and is it a Early99? You might just want to go to a T500 and new hpop lines and be done with it. If you have a Early99 the T500 Riffraff Diesel: Terminator T500 HPOP is a big improvement over stock.
Let us know what you find after getting it cleaned up.
And welcome to FTE
I appreciate the advice. I've been driving it around for work and it just seems like it doesn't have the power it used to. I will find leak and go from there.
If you have a big leak from the HPOP then that would cause low power, especially if the IPR is leaking. Boost leaks would cause black smoke on acceleration, low HPOP pressure would not.
Andy since you don't have you signature set up with stats of your truck can you give us a little more info on your truck. Do you know if it is a Early99, what is the build date (Drivers side door jamb sticker) How miles, have you done any modds or repais up to this point?
If you are only losing a couple of quarts in 5,000 miles, I doubt it is a heavy enough leak to cause performance issues. I think there are at least 2 separate issues.
This morning, after truck sitting in the cold all weekend, I had trouble starting and then once it started and blew out some light grey smoke, Iooked under to see if there was a leak, and there was a small pool of oil forming - a small stream of oil! :-o it was running smooth after a minute of being cranked but oil leaking rather quickly. It seemed to be coming from the front of engine somewhere.
Yeah, you have to find the leak. If it's making a pool, it's because the cold weather has caused the metal and an o-ring or fitting to contract enough to make it worse. First order of business is to eyeball the leak. Once you find it, then we can figure out what to do next.
Your non serviceable plug on the hpop might be leaking. You need to get it fixed if you have a stream of oil coming out or you will be dead on the road. Once you get that fixed we can address your low on power issue if you still have it. White smoke is normal coming out of the tail pipe after the truck has sat and its cold out. Once it warms up the smoke will go away unless you have another issue.
