Hey everyone, I have a 97 f250 hd with the 5.8 v8 and a 5 speed manual transmission. It is 2 wheel drive and had a 3.55 rear end. At the best i have got was about 14 mpg but its usually around 11 mpg without even tromping on it. Does this seem right to you guys? Thanks.
I got close to 13mpg one time!
Usually, it is around 10-11 for my 4x4 one ton with 4.10 gearing and the same engine/tranny combo in mixed paved/dirt road driving.
Your mpg sounds just about right.
I get about the same mileage from my '92 F250HD with the extended cab, 5.8L, 4.10LS, and E4OD.
About the only things you can do to help mileage are minimize the amount of acceleration you do, slow down from 70 to 55, keep the tires inflated to the proper pressure, and keep up with regular maintenance. Gotta' figure that, nice as they are, these vehicles are about as aerodynamic as a brick but if you need to Move Stuff they will do it without breaking a sweat.
If I could take my own advice about speed I could probably get another MPG from mine.
My F250 (351, C6, 4x4, 4.10 gears) gets between 9 and 13 mpg depending on the load. I have a friend with a 87 F250 (460, 2wd, NP435, 4.10s) and his mileage is noticeable worse, around 7-10 mpg.
