I've been reading this forum for about a year and have learned alot. I put a posting for a very frustrating problem I'm experiencing and have gotten squat for suggested causes. The problem is as follows:
I have a 1999 Expi with 85000 miles. recently the ABS light comes on intermitently and if the headlights are turned with the ABS light on, the engine stalls. Had it to the dealer who said the computer was clean but managed to sell me some rear brakes (I probably needed them).
Does anyone have any ideas? The alternator is fine also.
I would appreciate anything constructive that anyone has to offer!!!!
It sounds like you need to speak with another dealer or mechanic who will actually do MORE than just check for codes in the computer. It sounds like you can reproduce this problem as needed, so I also strongly suggest taking the mechanic on a road test so that he can see the problem first hand. Being a -good- mechanic is not only the ability to replace parts, but to diagnose & find the actual problem, then find a good fix.
Sounds like you have a ground fault to me. Try cleaning your battery cable connections, especially the negitive side. You can start at the battery and see if that helps, but you may also need to clean it at the block. Make sure the connection is shiney. I had a similar problem with a mustang some years ago. I'd hit the highbeams and the engine would die for a second or two. Negative connection at battery was just a little dingy, not corroded at all. Cleaned it up with a little emory cloth and the problem went away.
Did they pull the ABS codes or just the PCM codes? Typically, if you have an ABS light, you have codes set. The only time you won't get codes with an ABS light set is if the ABS controller is bad, or there is a power problem in the wiring.
If you didn't get codes, I would start chasing your grounds as mentioned by RickLe
