I could use some advice--before I start tossing money at the truck. A 1978 f150 4x4
Steering works just fine in warm weather--- but now that it's down in the 30's she's all over the road until I've driven about 45 min's
there is a little whine while cold / not when warm.
I'm running 10.50x15 tires no lift and every joint and connection in the front end except for the ball joints have been changed this in the last 6 months.
My best guess is the power steering pump but I would hate to replace that and find out it's the steering box.
what do you guys/gals think---should I just bite the bullet and buy a red top box and new pump ????
It probably has more to do with the tires than the steering. The BFG TA/KO's I'm running do the same thing. Even on my "new" truck (2002), PS will make a little noise till the fluid gets warmed up.
I'm using trans fluid and the tires are brand new (yesterday) coopers. this truck did this jan, feb of this year before I changed anything on the front end. And it's been working just fine until it got cold. I'm using the right fluid I think (ford transmission fluid)
I start to make a turn and steering acts like I hit a bolder in the road and it does this over and over again until warm (about 45mins of driving time) until then it's almost imposable to keep it in a lane.
just a update I've replaced all the ball joints (no Joy) next step a new steering gear (red top ) That should fix it '
