Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I thought all those concerned would like to know how long the cheapo $18 rotor and cap lasts. Mine are both now trash. They look like someone glued a thin stripe of 220 grit sand paper on the contacts.
The good thing is I can get a refund and buy the good ones. I seem to go through caps and rotor about once a year. Bad news to go along with the cap and rotor swap is I can wiggle the dizzy shaft. Is there a way to upgrade the dizzy? better bearings? I guess turning that 20/50 isn't too good for the bearings, not to mention the HV pump.
There is a hardened shaft for the HV pump. Usually when you don't use the hardened shaft, the shaft twists off on the first real cold day start.
As far as play in the distributer, that is a gear mesh with the cam, there is only so much play, unless it's side to side play, or something is twisting.
It is fairly simple to rebuild a distributor. Once the gear is off the bottom, it comes right apart. there you can get some measurements and see exactly what's going on in there
I guess it's possible the case is worn. You might want to get a junk yard distributer, and dissect it, looking for wear surfaces, etc. That way you can have it rebuilt and ready to drop in
