Mine was disconected. Whenever truck starts it made a snap burst of air sound. I plumbed lines back on and that sound was gone. The air pump connected makes an awful growling sound. I pulled hoses off. What is its purpose, and what is that piece the 2 tubes connect to? Truck drives fine without.
I have the cannister I think you are talking about; next to battery? I was told it is a charcoal filter.
My 96 5.8L has a factory idler pulley where the air pump would be on older models. Might think about heading to the yard and seeing if you can score one of these idlers, then you can keep your stock belt.
Hello dixie460.
I have an 87 F150 5.0L E4OD 2WD XLT Lariat.
I want to install the pulley. What years will work on my engine? Will I have to modify anything?

I wish I knew which years work but unfortunately I don't, and you have a 302 where I have a 351. I *doubt* that the mounting is any different, but I can't say that it'll bolt right up on your engine either.
Perhaps someone else can answer that, but if I were you I'd either go to the yard and get one cheap to try it out... or get one from Summit Racing, since you can call and have them verify it fits your engine before you spend $$.

I hope to make it to the boneyard tomorrow. They have been crushing some trucks even though there are several parts for us guys. I do not know what will be there tomorrow. There were (3) 87-88's that I was using for parts and if they are gone I am outta luck except for an Idler Pulley that I want.

That's the EVAP canister. It likely has charcoal in it. It's purpose is to keep gas fumes from escaping from the tanks to the air. The tank vent lines run through it. It's completely different from the air pump being talked about here.
Would this idler work?
