What does the air pump do? 5.8L

Mine was disconected. Whenever truck starts it made a snap burst of air sound. I plumbed lines back on and that sound was gone. The air pump connected makes an awful growling sound. I pulled hoses off. What is its purpose, and what is that piece the 2 tubes connect to? Truck drives fine without.

If I recall correctly it pumps air into the exhaust for a few seconds on start up to help lower initial start up emissions until the cat converter us warmed up.

Most of the time the solenoid valves are just dumping the air back to atmosphere

In 1995 they helped emissions... In 2013 they lock up tight eat/toss/melt/chew/devour your belt and leave you stranded on the side of the road. I replaced my pumps with idlers there are also threads on using different belts and routing to bypass it. I had bad results trying this on my 95 5.8's. Alt slips and tossed belts resulted. I say delete asap (just me) mine went in -5 degrees the first truck and just over freezing on the 2nd. I may be scorned. Im going for the laugh, but sadly im serious. Things pissed me off!

The system pumps air into the cats on start-up until the cats are up to temperature. If you are using factory cats, leave the system alone as they need the pump to function properly. If you have an aftermarket cat you can remove it.

Then keeping the system is pointless.

My 96 5.8L has a factory idler pulley where the air pump would be on older models. Might think about heading to the yard and seeing if you can score one of these idlers, then you can keep your stock belt.

Air injection predates cats. If you have plumbing into your exhaust manifolds, which I believe the 5.8L does, the air is to add oxygen to unspent fuel in the exhaust which has run out of oxygen - the exhaust is hot and, when the extra oxygen is added, it reburns in the exhaust manifold. So it reduces HC.

Now, on vehicles with a 3-way catalyst, which all our trucks do have, air is also directed to the NOx cat where it helps to cool that cat down from it's reaction. Some engines have both, but all with 3-way have it plumbed to the cat. My 460 has it only plumbed to the cat - I do not have the lines to the exhaust manifolds.

That would be sweet! I'm moving to the city and they have air care. Wonder if I could get by without cats if I has the factory pulley?

If they inspect for it the sticker on the core support will hang you out to dry saying it was there at one point in time. You can buy that pully and bracket from ford racing (summit racing stocks it). Thats what I used "Idler" in my above post.
