I have a 79 f100 and I'm trying to ID my rear axle... the door code says it's a 06J, and fordification (1973-1979 Ford Truck VIN Tag Codes (Rear Axle) - FORDification.net) says that only the 75 and 77 have that rear end... so, I'm kinda confused. Also, Is it just a standard thing with the 3 on the tree that you either have to rev 2nd gear up high or drop into 3rd really low which causes some shuddering? It's really annoying, especially on city hills.
This is from the Ford parts catalog:
Axle 06J=(06) 1977-up Ford 9" non-locking 2.75 ratio 2,900 lb capacity (J) with power steering.
As for the second problem, with a 3 speed I would rather have something in the 3.25-3.50 range. I know its factory but 2.75 is kinda high, especially if you drive in hilly areas.

^x2 I have a 79 300 6cyl with 2.75's and I have to spike the rpms so it catch up with itself in third.. its mostly flat here in alabama, I couldn't imagine how annoying it would be in a hilly city especially with something in the bed.
