The center console has some nice storage volume, but not really usable. The little removable tray is a good start, but not enough for the little thing. I looked for plastic tray of some sort that was the right size but didn't find one so I made one of oak.
Just go to home depot and ask them to cut a strip of wood up like this:
Make sure all cuts are within 1/16" or better
To suspend the tray in the console, I made 4 legs wrapped in black carpet. They are attached to the corners with 3M double sided body tape.
Just glue, sand, stain, varnish, and add some rubber sheets. Fill with junk and your done.
Didn't really want to use wood, but it worked out ok. It was kind of a fun little project and only took a few beers.
I made one from some expanded metal, for capping gutters I believe, used felt tape to cover sharp edges and some aluminum edging for corners. Made it same size as the factory tray so it would become the top. I'm liking the layout, thinking about making a more finished one along the lines of yours smoky. Pics for thought.
