Hey everybody. Long time reader of the forum first time poster.
I picked up an 06 F250 XLT Lariat with a blown up 6.0 dirt cheap. There are a lot of missing parts from under the hood (top half of the engine) The body is in excellent shape and the inside just needs a good cleaning.
My plan is to swap the cab and the rest of the body onto my 01 F350 XL v10.
I know I will have to make a trip to DMV to get the title straight.
My question is how different is the under the dash wiring harness?
Sounds cool. I'm sure you already thought through this but have you considered dropping a replacement 6.0 in? You can sell the 01 V10 to finance part of the new motor. Several places offer turn key engine replacements both new and used. I asked my ford dealer for a "hypothetical" cost of dropping a new replacent from ford in (includes everything) and they said around 12k.
I have throught about dropping a jasper 6.0 in it but my friend and I went in on the 06 together. I wanted the body and he wants the frame and running gear. My friend is planning on doing a cummins swap into the 06 frame and using the body from the 01. He is really hard on his trucks so he doesn't mind starting out with a truck that already has some scratches and dents on it.
My question is how different is the under the dash wiring harness?
Thanks in advance for the help.
It's completely different. You are going to have to use the entire under dash and cab wiring from your '01. The '01 has a GEM where the '06 has a VSM. Make sure you swap that over as well....

Sure.
The GEM is for General Electric Module and it controls a variety of automatic functions in the cab such as One Touch Down windows, interior courtesy light timer, Keep alive radio, wiper motor timer, 4x4 instrumentation etc.
Around the 2002 model year, Ford changed to a VSM which I 'think' stands for Vehicle Security Module but I am not positive on that description....perhaps someone can help me out there...
The VSM controls FAR more things than the GEM ever did...so it's quite a bit more complicated. To further complicate the issue, the '02 and later SD models have quite a few more 'modules' on the system.....one of which is the instrumentation (dash gauges). The '02 and later cluster will not work on a GEM truck so that is why you need to swap out everything if you want to keep it simple.
In addition, the '99 to '01 models have two distribution boxes for fuses...one under the hood and another under the dash. The '02 and later trucks have everything in a single unit under the dash. That is going to be the main reason why you want to keep the wiring harness and transfer it over into the new cab as a complete system. Obviously you are going to have to keep the engine harness....but you also will need to retain the under hood harness as well as the under dash harness because the '06 under dash harness will not pug into the '01 under hood harness where they meet at the firewall. And.....since you are going to retain the '01 under dash harness then you might as well retain the dash itself since the heater and fan controls will work correctly. This means you are retaining the '01 fuse boxes, the GEM and the instrument cluster.
And, since you are going that far.....might as well retain the in cab harness so the windows and locks function as well (assuming they are powered).
