I have a 79 Ford p/u,the steering wheel will not return to centre after making a turn.I have to bring the steering wheel back to centre.Any ideas ?
I have checked tire pressures, replaced driver side tie-rod,everything else seems alright. Moe
It could also happen when the caster is way out.
On a 2WD unless there has been frame damage I doubt thats the cause. Caster is preset and isn't easy to change.
4WD you can swap the bushings to change caster.
You didn’t state if it was 2wd or 4wd. This would make a world of difference in the responses you get. If it is 2wd then there could be more than one problem. It could be the sector shaft adjusting screw set too tight. It could be toe in set improperly. This would be simple to adjust. The most common problem is the caster that is extremely hard to correct. Make sure your radius arm bushings are in good shape. They can screw up the caster if they are shot. I have seen guys take a torch to the radius arms and bend them down to increase the caster. They did make an adjustment kit several years ago that you could put into the boltholes where the axle and the radius arms bolt together that were offset and allowed the adjustment of the caster. I don’t know if these kits are still available.
If it's a 2wd, the king pins could be too tight. To verify, jack it up, take the wheel off, disconnect the tie-rod end, and see if the spindle rotates easily and smoothly. If not, try lubing them. If that doesn't help, then the bushings weren't reamed correctly. If you google "memory steer" you can get some more culprits.
Thanks guys,its a 2 wd.Somehow I felt it won't be a quick fix.Might try a couple of suggestions if that fails I guess a good front-end man.Thanks again, Moe
