Currently in process of buying a 01 Excursion Limited. I've been told by multiple persons that the transmission for the 99-03 was bad, but besides that are there any other issues they had? Also is 12k too much for a 7.3L with 159,000 miles?

The transmissions are just fine and when built up are quite bulletproof...
Is it 4wd?
In excellent condition?
What area of country?
How bad do you want it?
Is it worth it to you?
People buy what they want, regardless of whether it is worth it.
Just saying folks are paying top dollar for low mileage 7.3.

It is a 4x4. Its in pretty good condition. New brakes, new exhaust, lifted, and maintenance done on time. The interior needs some work. I'm up in CT and my jeep just died on me so I'm in the market for a new ride. Wanted a diesel for a while.
I lost my e40d at about 150k, had it rebuilt by a reputable shop that put in aftermarket bits for around 3k, with an SD cooler and tossed a 3 year 36k warranty on it I can't say enough good about Zach's in Longmont, Colorado. I can't get the damned thing above 150-160f when pulling HARD. Rock solid now.
Thanks for info. I just don't want to drop 12k for it and immediately have to spend another couple grand in repairs.
Ask if you can take it to a diesel shop or transmission shop for inspection and drop a couple hundred for the inspections. If the owner disagrees run away.

If that is going to break you buy a car you can better afford. There is nothing wrong with the e4od tranny in general, although I've heard of this diode issue on specific models.

when i sold my first excursion i dont think i would have let them take it to a shop. But thats just me. Some shops could "find" problems and then the buyer would want to pay less for problems that dont exist.

It won't break me, I just would like to not go through the hassle of fixing a hidden problem. Want to make the offer today.
If it drives ok now, then you're taking the same risk you'd take with any "higher" mileage car.
Maintenance records sure would help to know if they ever changed the fluid.
If I were you, I'd also be considering the money you're going to want to put into it right after you buy it for all the fluid changes, fuel filters, etc. If you don't have any records for the car, you're going to have to start your own maintenance schedule.
That was the biggest shocker for me when I bought our 03 6.0l last year. The car ran great but with no maintenance history (why do dealers throw all that stuff out?) I had to start replacing fluids. Diesels hold A LOT of fluid.

When I sell my cars and folks want an inspection I arrange to take them in myself. But thats just me.
When I bought my X I was glad I asked the kid to allow me to do it. He took it to my mechanic. I knocked 2k off the price for a couple of LEGITIMATE deferred maintenance items. Bought my X with 92k on the clock for $12,500.00. This was 07' when everyone was freaked about driving big vehicles and gas prices. I sold a 07' Yukon XLT with low miles at a loss back to the GMC dealer I'd been looking for a clean 7.3 X for more than 18 months. Glad I did. My X is appreciating and my Yukon would be worth poop now.

In that case it's not a bad deal. It's just a lot to spend for a ten year old car. I paid that much for a six month old camry for the wife a few years ago. Whether it's worth it is up to you, but you can't expect any ten year old car with 160k miles on it to be trouble free.
Ive got 297,000 on my factory tranny and never had a problem. I tow a 12K boat all the time all over the east coast. I would recommend an external tranny filter like the one from DieselSite and a tranny cooler from a 6.0, preferably a 31 row one. A deep Tranny pan would also help.
