Oh isn't there a way to know if the transmission has been serviced? I thought there was some external filter or some device that goes on them if they've been cracked. I seem to recall something like this...I have a cast, finned extra capacity pan on my rebuild - again hard to heat that sucker up any more.
So $12,000 isnt really a good price for one with 156,500 miles on it then I'm guessing. I want to pull the trigger but need some reassurance it wont be a regret later, lol.

Today its an excellent price. Excellent 7.3's go for as much as 20k+ nowadays.
I (stole) bought mine at the height of fuel prices, #2 was almost $5.00/gallon in Colorado historically one of the lowest fuel price states in the Union. Here's pricing for 7.3l Excursions within 500 miles of Georgia. ( I don't know where you are, but your handle suggests the South):

Well I'm actually stationed in Connecticut right now, and diesels $4.07 - $4.25 right now. I can handle the fuel price. I was getting 12-14 mpg city in my Mustang while paying $4.25 for premium.
Yeah, I love them. Just nervous about purchasing a used car with that many miles again. My wrangler just crapped out on me after I put 20k miles on it.(Currently at 133k). So yeah used vehicles are a touchy subject for me.
12k for a decent shape X limited 7.3 engine...4wd...159 on the odom...is about spot on...and actually it is a pretty good deal to be honest because the problem is go find one.
Sure you can find others but what they are selling at and what it requires you to even look at one ...you would be miles ahead just buying the one local. I have owned 11 Jeeps,,,real Jeeps ...Cj's and Wranglers...and I can tell you I always wanted an X and bought one a few years back. I love it. Sure I can't take it on some tight trails but there is nothing I can't pull, it goes in the snow/ice in 2wd as good as those Jeeps in 4wd..the mileage for the weight and power if I keep my foot out of it is in the upper teens which is amazing considering the rolling mass...
as far as things to look for...since you are like me in the northeast area check the under side very good as the road salt gets real hungry with vehicles. cycle through the transfer case selections, turn the wheel while in 4wd while moving on something dry (like a parking lot or paved road)and make sure the steering binds up( so you know the 4wd is REALLY working ) Put the x on a very slight slope. I mean very slight. Put in Park. Place it in drive and let off brake. In 2wd does the tranny start to pull you on its own up the slight grade? That is not a tell all do all for the tranny being good or not but gives good indication if its working strong.
lastly the steering might wander a tad but that is an easy fix.
If its a limited with heated leather don't be surprised if the driver and passenger seat don't heat...a problem they had was using too small of wire as the heating element and they would burn themselves out. Again another easy fix. (the wire itself would just burn to the point of being apart of the rest of the wire
How are the tires. X tires and especially if you say it is lifted would be a large expense.
