Drove a potential purchase today, an '05 I posted about a few days ago. It was the first one Ive driven since buying a Scangauge and monitoring while driving.
Got it out on the highway after doing a few miles around town to warm it up. Ambient temps were in the 60's. Cruising at 67mph (+/-2) delta stayed around 10* (187/197) but didnt go much below 10*. There were a few times it was 13*-14*s, and 15* once for a brief second or two.
The widest gaps we figured was when the fan engaged, unfortunately at the time I didnt think to view fan RPM when it was happening. We were seeing 182-183 ECT and 196-197 EOT. ECT would come back up a few degrees but EOT would stay pretty steady at 196-197. Never saw it go above 197 come to think of it.
Is that 13-15* delta with the fan engaged ok when we were seeing 10* the rest of the time or should the temps follow each other more closely ?

Thanks,

Based on the ambient temp and your EOT & EOT numbers, I think it is OK for now, but will need a new oil cooler in the future. But are you sure you heard the fan kick on? That's not right at those temps. If you buy it, I'd suggest flushing and back flushing everything related to coolant. It may bring your temps a little closer together.
Fan shouldn't have kicked in at those temps, fan is typically 300-700 rpm and not audible.
There are things that cause fan to ramp up, trans temp i think, not sure about others.
Did you scan for codes? Some folks will remove bulbs from dash to cover up a check engine light.
Fan engaging was a guess at this point, didnt hear it but the coolant temp was fluctuating enough that I figured that was what it was. Trans is a manual. Dont know enough about them at this point, thats why Im asking. Learning as fast as I can.
Codes: No. Got distracted when I got it plugged in and forgot to go back to it...
I did check ICP & FCM cold, cranking and hot. ICP cold idle was mid 600's, hot was in the high 500's, but the oil (whatever the dealer used) had somewhere between 4k-5k on it. Dont know if that makes a difference. FCM was 47.5-48 the whole time.
Make sure you set the cruise at around 67 and drove on flat highway for about 10 to 15 minutes. My temps were 10 degrees difference when I bought my truck with 172,000 miles on the odometer. I now have 181,600 and it's still 10 degrees. Mine goes to 13 degrees difference when I'm at 80 mph. Doesn't mean yours will be ok, just giving you the facts.
The cooler looks to be starting to clog, but is ok for now.

Probably - I don't take much comfort in the delta being "good" anyway. It can change, so as long as you love the rest of the truck and can afford a oil/egr cooler replacement then do it. And you might drive years w/o a failure the way it is now too.
