so when i try to kick into 'passing gear' in this '01 f250 5.4l, i get no tranny shift. whether i'm in tow/haul mode or not. have searched the forum (man, what a lot of info!), and not found a suitable solution. was hoping someone might have some insight into this. thanx in advance.
There's no such thing as "passing" gear. Your 4R100 has 1st, 2nd, 3rd, overdrive, and torque converter lockup.
Shifting is controlled by the computer when the shift liver is in the normal (OD) position. You'll likely need to look at the various PCM inputs to see what's wrong.

hence the quotation marks around it. just a reference so anyone reading the post would know what i was referring to. the downshifting of the transmission due to input from the accelerator pedal seemed a bit lengthy.thank you for your prompt reply. perhaps someone else might direct me a bit more in depth, as i'm very much a novice w/all things f250.
There is also no tow/haul mode on a 2001 truck. There is an overdrive off mode, but that isn't tow/haul.
You'll likely need to look at the various PCM inputs to see what's wrong. Checking for codes would also be a good idea. The places that read codes free CANNOT read the codes that you need.
my mistake. too many vehicles to keep straight. i purchased a code scanner (obd2), but i don't think it deals w/the auto tranny. just the engine, abs, and srs. guess i'll be hitting 'passing gear' manually for a while! i have no 'service engine soon' light illuminated; i guess tranny problems don't reveal themselves in this fashion. i appreciate your posting.
If your scanner does ABS and SRS, it probably is able to deal with transmission and other "Manufacturer-specific" codes.
Since all of the sensors go into the PCM, if your scanner can read individual PIDs, it should be of use. What make and model scanner do you have?
Other than no kick-down shifting, are there any other drivability symptoms, whether related to the transmission or not?
the scanner is an OTC 9450 (hope that helps), $100 on amazon; no other drivability problems. about 13mpg loaded w/ladder rack; this seems about right for mileage. 200k miles. don't know what PIDs mean; scanner categories are abs, srs, and worldwide obd2 codes.
Looks like your scanner can do several PIDs, but the manual gives it scant attention. You can look at the TPS and the calculated load **** that would be useful, but not much else is in the manual.
well, i changed out the throttle position sensor (had a p0122 code) and the kickdown is now working for me. w/over 200k and the original tps, i guess it was time. much thanks for your postings-happy motoring. this truck is used for work (much hauling of equipment and materials), so the kickdown is not used much. nice to know it's there, though.
