after you drive for awhile with a trailer, the tranny will adapt and start to shift different. makes it really weird once you unhook the trailer...the tranny has to relearn a normal shift pattern
try it. from a dead stop accelerate to 50 mph and hold. at 40-43 mph it'll shift into 4th gear. with o/d off, you will remain in 3rd gear. just count the shifts.
the O/D on/off switch does the same thing it has always done since 1992 when the E40D transmission was introduced. it electronically isolates 4th gear from being used.
my Dodge on the other hand does what you are describing. the Tow/Haul mode in my Durango senses shift patterns and will lock out 5th gear and 4th gear if necessary. Supposedly the 09 F-150 will have a similar Tow/Haul setup
