Coolant flush in PROGRESS!

As the title says!

Getting it prepped with valves and T-stat out is a process in itself!

First time doing this and the score so far is :

Me: 0
Starter: 1

I am a decent wrench but DANG the top bolt was a PITA!

I finally figured out that I could unplug the block heater wiring and that allowed me to get the bolt out!

I will post pictures of my coolant when I get a chance! It looked like it was clean in the degas bottle, but it isn't!

I am thankful that I got the Fleet Restore to do the flush!

I have a question for the collective.

After I got the Fumoto valves int he block and the starter back in, it was much faster going in then it was coming out. I started the truck and backed it out of the garage. I opened the left side valve and put the hose in the degas bottle and let it run. I turned the heat to high front and rear. The water came out clear zero anti freeze color and zero dirt. I opened up the right side valve and the same thing.

I figured since I didn't see any antifreeze or dirt right away, there was not much antifreeze in the system, I started the truck up with both valves open and the same thing. After about 5 minutes I closed the valves added the restore and topped off the degas bottle.

Is this a good sign or a bad sign? Am I missing something? I would have thought there would have been more crud in the system. The antifreeze looked awful.

Color of the water can clear up pretty quickly. Trash is hard to see unless you are using a catch bucket. Some of it even floats and will wash out of the catch bucket if it overflows. Revving the engine with the drains open will move more a lot of water out of the drains quicker and hopefully take any remaining solids out with it.

It must be coolant flush day! I'm doing mine as well. Are you back flushing the oil cooler?

I hope the restore is out now. You're not supposed to leave it in longer than 3 hrs. And yes, it will be much faster going in than coming out. You can open both block drains and the radiator drain and you will still overflow the degas with the water hose. Even with the truck running. The only time it comes out faster than going in, is when you hit the throttle for a few seconds.

Restore went in at 6:15 PM and was out by 9 PM. VC-9 went in at 9:30 PM and came out at 10:45 PM. Flushed with tap water for an hour. Then 30 gallons of distilled water went through her.

We just got in the house about 30 minutes ago.

The last flush was almost as clear as the distilled water out of the jug.

Put it all back together and filled her up. Let her idle while we cleaned up, all was going well Water Temp was a few degrees higher then oil. Plenty of heat front and rear and then I saw multiple fast drips. I slid underneath and I see a waterfall of RED coolant!

Check the thermostat and upper hose I put on. Have my boy shut it off. Trace the lower hose all dry. It was dripping off the inside edge of the power steering pump and onto the front cover around the oil pump relief valve.

The truck started making a squeaking noise a few weeks ago and it got progressively worse. I guess cleaning the coolant system and knocking the crud loose finished it. I thought it was an idler on the belt or the belt itself.
So I will take the wife to work in the AM or just sleep in and dream of my new job I start in 2 weeks.

It is slated for removal in the near future. I wanted to but was running short on time. I bought all the stuff to back flush the heater core and oil cooler.

'Scuse me butting in here....

Planning to do this myself around Thanksgiving, only time I'll have two days off in a row for the next few months, anyways... So it is kosher to run BOTH Restore and VC9 thru (not at the same time obviously) then? VC9 I'm assuming comes from the dealer, where's a good source for Rrstore?

Restore can be bought here:

Restore Coolant System Cleaner Gallon, CC2610, Fleetguard Cummins - Ryder Fleet Products

Ordered on Sunday showed up on Thursday. It has to ship ground.

VC-9 is from your local ford dealer.

If you are changing to a diesel specific coolant you run both.

What were your deltas before the flush? Is this what provoked the flush or is it purly a preventive maintenance thing? Thanks!

My deltas are pushing a 20 degree spread. I flushed it due to both the spread, pending cooler change and preventive maintenance.

I was excited as it was getting to temp that the oil temp was closer to the coolant temp, then Niagara falls started.

I just got back from the parts store. Another 245.00 for a water pump, power steering pump, fan clutch tool and 6 qts of mercron 5. The wife is going to tally this weeks repairs up and cut me off till 2015!

The truck started making a squeaking noise about 6 weeks ago....maybe longer. Started really faint and was getting louder. It started making more noise as I did the coolant flush. I put the T-stat in and 3.5 gallons of coolant and 2 gallons of distilled water. Put the cap on the degas and let it run till the T-stat opened to finish adding water. Temp hit 145 F and it was a nice steady annoying droplet stream.

Got under it took a look. Checked the T-stat and hose I removed and installed all dry! Got back under it and traced it to around the PS pump and could see it running down the front cover.

So really is no big deal! I thought it was the pump making noise, but since my first interaction with the fan shroud was not a fun one and nothing was leaking I let it go. I knew I had a PS pump leaking/weeping so I am going to kill 2 birds with one stone. PS pump and water pump along with a new lower hose will go into today. I have to go back to work tomorrow and will need a good night sleep.

Coolant Flush in progress UPDATE!!

So just to update this thread...

After throwing in the towel Sunday on this I had it towed to a buddy's shop to install a water pump and power steering pump.

So I thought I had a water pump leak since I had a stream of coolant and a large squeaking/sqrollering noise. It turns out that the water pump was good but I had a cracked water pump pulley and a pin leak in the NEW upper hose that I couldn't find. The leak went down the front housing and over the power steering pump, to the cross member. I also had a cracked Degas bottle and bad cap.

We went and picked it up tonight and drove it at 65 MPH for 40 mins and the deltas are now between 10-15 F. Still on the high side but better then the 27-32 F deltas I was seeing. The highest spread I saw was 22 F at 80 MPH.

After getting off the highway and making my way to the house 5 minutes later my delta spread was 9 F.

So in short order I did the flush, put in a new NAPA thermostat, Degas bottle and cap, fleetguard red coolant.

Before the flush and the work listed above my temperature never reached 188 F. Now the gauge reads 190 constantly and the highest it got was 194 when I pushed it to 90 for a short time.

Just wanted to let you all know what the outcome was on this.
