UOA every oil change

As I have posted before I do an Used Oil Analysis at every oil change just to keep an eye on everything. Several years ago I caught a leaking injector o-ring.

Well my latest OC I had just received the report back and I have 3.5 fuel in the oil, so I am going to assume that the opposite bank now has a bad o-ring. It goes in next week to get diagnosed/repaired.

For the little bit of money it costs do have an UOA done it is well worth it in preventitive maintainance.

The sample was perfect other than the fuel contamination, FE was low and for some reason viscosity was a mid-range 30wt. (10w-30)

I have had what I consider a few occasional "false positives" on fuel contamination levels from my Blackstone reports. My highest value was around 2.5% and then it went away (0.5% or less) in all of the subsequent (7) oil samples. Also had one at 2% from them early on ............ and the next 12 samples were at or below 0.5%. That is when I got the one at 2.5%.

All-in-all, I agree that the UOA is a handy tool.

I'll be submitting my first Blackstone sample in about another 1500 miles before I hit 5000 miles on an oil change. I'm using Delvac 5w40 and will be switching to T5 10w30 on this next oil change. If I can find the JD plus 50 10w30 for cheaper, I may just use that. Looking for a price point of around $12-$14 per gallon.

I decided to switch to the 10w30, from 5w40 after reading this post...

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...lter-post.html

I began doing some research and came up with this...

............. Plus 50 II ...... Delvac 1300Super ...Delo 400LE ....Rotella T5
VISCOSITY
@40C..............80.1.............79............. ......80...................78.9
@100C.............12.1.............12............. ......12...................12
VIS INDEX........133..............148................. .145.................147
POUR POINT.......-40..............-33..................-27................-42
FLASH POINT......223..............215..................2 04...............224
TBN...............10.5..............8.6........... .......8.7...................10
SULFATED ASH.......1................ .99.................1..................1
HTHS...............3.6..............3.6........... ......???..................3.5 (actual unknown but per API spec for grade)

I will get the UOA for the 5w40 and then again when I switch to T5 (or John Deere plus 50) I haven't decided yet...and compare the results and decide from there what to do next. I used Delo 15w40 (dino oil) and switched to Delvac 5w40 for this oil change. I never sent a sample to blackstone, but I ordered the test kit to send it in for this sample. I'm eventually looking to extend my Oil Change Interval (OCI) to 7500 mi.

Since July 29, I have put 8,900 miles on my truck. Averaging almost 3,000 miles per month. If Blackstone will tell me that I can extend my oil changes to 7,500 with syn blend, it will save me a good amount. T5 in it, that will save me $6.00 per gallon (about the same amount it costs to get the UOA) and as roadrunner already mentioned, it could save me even more by uncovering potential issues before they leave me stranded.

Just remember, not all of the issues with oil may show up immediately. Success is in longevity. Fuel dilution or water in the oil are a few examples of where it is possible to get immediate feedback on a problem by doing UOA (assuming you have confidence in the lab).

I switched to a highly recommended oil at around 10k miles on the odometer and at about 60k miles (10 oil changes) the lead values jumped up significantly - for several analyses. The oil (Schaeffers 9000) was not API certified, but they claimed it met or exceeded all of the API specifications. After I switched to Rotella T6, the lead numbers came down quickly. Since then, I have used Valvoline PBE, Mobil 1 5W40, and now Mobil Delvac 1 and the high lead numbers have not returned. Point being, conclusions often times should not be made on a few oil change analyses. It is great that people post up the oil anaysis results though - especially over a long period of time as Roadrunner has. That information is very useful and convincing.

So .... I want to first make sure that no one assumes that I am saying that the 10W30 is a bad oil. It seems to be working for quite a few folks. I plan to try it at some point in the future - probably after a fair trial of the Mobil Delvac 1 5W40 that I am currently using. I am still skeptical of the 10W30 in 100 degree heat when towing heavy loads, but that is for another discussion.

I will say that I am hesitant to use the John Deere Plus 50 II 10W30 oil since it is not API certified (according to a few internet forums). Clearly an oil does not have to have the certification to be good, but I am very curious as to why a company would not gain the certification. It simply is not all that much money (or at least it wasn't years ago when this topic had a lot of attention). After the Schaeffer experience, I decided to stick to API certified oils. Others will probably take a different position, and that is fine.

There are a few T5 10W30 threads here on FTE. They are all generally positive reports of it. If you can, give it a good workout - towing over 10k lbs in summer weather. A number of foks here would like to see the results I am sure.

I'll check it out, the problem is that I don't tow regularly, but I would probably be able to do 10k this summer. I tow a 7k trailer with four wheelers and then one in the truck bed and all of the kids in the truck on a 300 mile roundtrip to Durhamtown. I'll do a couple of those runs and change it out after 7500 miles.

By the way, I found this thread at the other site: What is a TBN?

If you take the sample cold, and don't tell them, it could come back positive. I saw that in their documentation. I believe I even saw it on one of roadrunner's reports. They told him to take the sample hot next time.

You are correct, but I am aware of that (been doing it for a good many years and that is oil sampling 101). My samples were taken correctly ....... oil was hot and it was after at least 10 miles (usually 20) of highway driving.

Blackstone estimates fuel dilution from a flash point test. Other Labs use Gas Chromatography.

http://www.machinerylubrication.com/...l-diluents-oil

I have gone so far as to split samples between Blackstone and other labs and IMO the Blackstone fuel dilution number is not always reliable.

Here are good articles on proper oil sampling:

Where can I find the reports that you have shared and the ones that roadrunner has posted? I would like to have them available when I compare mine.
