Will too much initial timing cause an engine to run warmer at highway speeds under a load? I run warm when towing (200) and have replaced everything. I checked my timing for the first time today, the hold down was loose and the initial was at 30! I backed it down to 6. Besides being easier to start I wonder if it might cool it down some when towing.
I didn't think about the balancer slipping. I may have actually retarded the engine. I will check it.
You know the more I think about it I realize that I accidently moved the dizzy before checking it because the hold down was so loose. So it may have been set differently than I observed.
I did have to reset the idle RPM, I had to increase it by about 150 RPM after I reset the timing.
I check TDC and see what I find. Thanks for the advice.
I disconnected the vacuum advance to check the timing. I'm using the timed vacuum port for the vac advance. My balancer is in good shape and if it slipped its too minimal for me to tell after checking TDC. I think my bumping the dizzy and moving it before I checked the timing resulted in my high reading. I have it set at about 8 now and it runs and pulls good. For kicks I drive it set at 0, wow what a dog. Friday night I hauled our camper 3 hours to visit family and the truck did well. We are loading up now and heading home.
