I have a 71 F100 Sport Custom Short bed with a 351W and a Borg Warner T5. Shifting is an issue so I want an automatic. I bought a C6 to use with the 351W until my other engine is ready and I am ready to put in the CV IFS and Mark V111 IRS I just purchased.
I have a driveshaft that I believe to be the original when the truck had a 390 in it. The truck still has the original steering column which was for an Automatic.
1) Did the 71 Sport Custom with 390 come with a C6?
2) Is there somewhere I can research the trucks original options using the Vin number?
3) Is it likely I can use the driveshaft I believe to be the original to do my C6 swap?

2) Found Vinwiz.com does classics and pre 17 digit vin. My truck was originally manufactured with a 302 unless option records weren't well kept back then.???
In 71 that truck probably came with a 360. The auto for it should have been the C6. It is likely that the driveshaft will fit, but you won't know for sure until everything is switched over.
302 AND 351W mount the same. Original 302 could be swapped with a 351w super easy. 1979 was 1st year Ford put a C6 behind a small block. You will have to find a C6 with the small block specific bell housing bolt pattern. But note, a C4 can be built pretty stout. C4's may be easier to find. Don't forget to match the torque convertor to the cam that's in the engine. Stock cam...stock convertor. Hotter cam.....stall convertor.
Yes, I already have the 351 in the car with a T-5 behind it. I have the C6 and am getting ready to install along with The Mark V111 IRS and a Crown Vic IFS.
