1968??? help!

Hi guys, im new here. actually just registered. I need some help on a couple of questions. First let me start by saying, the other day i bought a 1978 f100 with a 302 automatic (on the column). the motor runs great, and the truck drives pretty well, the only problem is the body is shot. its litterly has been flipped on the drivers side or something like that. I've found some places were there is half inch thick bondo lol. but anyway, today i bought a 1968 f100, and its in pretty decent condition. it has a 390 with a 3 speed. the motor in this truck is bad, so im wanting to put the 302 with auto in the 1968. my questions are..
will the driveshaft line up?
will the column swap fit?
and will my disk brakes off the 1978 fit?
any info will desperately help!

If the 78 has a C6 transmission and the 3-speed in the 68 is a C6, it is an easy swap...you'll just have to change motor mounts. I think a small block C6 (302) is the same length as a big block (390) C6. Might be some difference in driveshaft length, but a driveshaft shop can cure that for not much $$$. The steering column and brakes swap should also work...search here and at fordification.com for threads on how to do both. I've seen both swaps discussed on both boards. If the 78 has power steering, you might investigate adding that to the 68 too. PS is way better than manual on these old Fords.

Thanks tmcalavy for replying, I couldn't find Any thing on fortification. It probably would be a good idea to go through the 302, but I'm limited on money right now considering I'm 15 and this is my first truck. Thanks again, and if u find out anything else let me kno.

My truck was originally a factory 3 speed truck. I switched everything over from another automatic truck and it fit. The transmission I switched to is a C6 transmission and it is tight, but it will work, even with the 5 inch hump. The 3 speed trans and the C6 trans are the same length I believe because I am still running my same drive shaft as it hooked right up.

Here is a thought. Put your body on the '78 frame. You will have everything you want & everything under the truck will be the same year. Easy to remember when buying parts. The frames are pretty much the same and I wouldn't expect any problems doing the swap. Just swap the '78 column into your cab. If not tilt search out a tilt as long as you are swapping.

May sound like more work and it may be a small amount of more work. The only issue I see for you is frame damage. If the truck was rolled there is a good posibility the frame is twisted or bent. A few bolts and unhook the harness. Bed is off. Unhook the fuel line steering column, shifter (if a stick), brake lines at the master, e brake cable, throttle cable, heater hoses, 4 bolts and the cab is off. Before the cab you will have to pull the front clip. A handfull of bolts, a few hoses and it all comes off in one piece.

To go the other way you pull the engine and trans (roughly the same amount of disconnect), pull the I Beams, pull the steering box. Getting the idea? If me I would be looking at both paths before deciding which is best. Providing both trucks are the same wheelbase driveshaft from '78 should work no problem in the '68 after the engine and trans is in. Use the motor mounts from the '78 on the '68. Everything you need whichever way you go you already have UNLESS one is a 4WD and the other a 2WD. If that be the case the easiest would be the frame swap.

C6 behind a 302 is rare , normally ford put c4 with the 302.
simple solution

1968.....mine and the truck I switched with. Regardless, I am sure that it would be the same thing as both of the transmissions you are talking about is the same size. What I am saying is I KNOW that the trans will fit in your 68, even if you have the small hump as I have in mine. So I am sure the driveshaft will fit as it should too........
Disks will swap out and column will swap out as well.

First year that FoMoCo offered the C6 (as an option) with a 302 in F100/150's: 1978. But...some still used the C4.

I was thinking that as well ND. I havent seen too many 302's with a C6. Even if its a C4, he can still swap it out and use the drive shaft from the donor truck and he still should be OK. Just saying.

1968 Stepside

I everyone, its been a long time since I 've been on but I am back with with a new ride. A few years ago I bought a 1968 short box F 100 , with the inline 6 300 ci engine in it and the 4 speed manual tranny. It runs great and I just need a little work on it to make it my daily driver. My old ride was a 1965 F100 with a 352 , 4 speed. I never could get that to start, but I lost that in my divorce several years back.
