After new years 2014 im looking to build a flat bed for my 78 ranger. Anyone have any good pictures or ideas. http://www.protech.net/img/products/...um_flatbed.jpg
the linked pic is kind of what im thinking of but with med sized dropped down tool boxes near the cab, but wear they dont hang down low.
GOOD or BAD idea?
Thank you for the pictures those are some pretty badass ideas for a bed. As far as the chevy pic, it just reminds us what to look for on the side of the road.
I'll get some pics of the two beds i've built so far tonight, my school laptop doesn't have them. For now i'll share some design aspects. First, the headboard shape and how it fits the cab. When I did my 73 I went with an 8ft wide bed and a massive rectangular headboard, making the truck look like a farm truck with the headboard dwarfing the cab at 4 ft high and full width, nice but not fancy. The second bed got more angles in the design, much better. I built it for my dads 97 F-superduty (F450) and made the angle portion follow the shape of the cab, then put a 6 inch horn above the pot cross-bar for carrying stuff. At the same time the tube tapers from 4x2 tube the 2x2 tube through the angled portion that followed the cab. Next I made the header the same width as the cab, but made the deck frame 7.5 ft, leaving a step on the side so as to climb up on the deck from the running board rather than monkey climb up, which also keeps the duals under the bed so I only need mud flaps and not fenders or flares. The pics will show it better, even though its not mounted, but it came out pretty good and once its painted it should really look nice.
Edit: Checked PB and remembered I uploaded them already so here's what i'm talking about. First is the nice bed for my dad then the "farm" bed I built in HS for my senior project, I had to use aluminum because "steel would be too easy" and since I didn't pay for it I didn't argue. Both are built for wood decks but diamond plate looks nice too.
Here you can see how it will follow the cab, just imagine a 97 cab with the roof level with the top bar...
Pay no mind to the open header in the first two pics, I hadn't welded it in yet.
There are some nice looking beds there. It almost makes me wish my bed were so bad that I needed to build a bed. If I did, it would probably be less work than what I'm faced with in getting my bed back in shape.
