My uncle has been having some problems with his 88 Ranger 4x4 Extended cab with 2.9L V6, Mitsubishi 5spd...
When putting the truck in gear, would make a loud bang when going from 3rd to 4th, would shake the floor and seat of your pants, afterwards it got to the point where the truck wouldn't downshift, wouldn't take any gear, and finally it's nearly impossible to make the truck move at all.
Now, the question is, what's more likely -- a transfer case, or an actual transmission problem?
I just replaced one of these in my buddie's 88. Turns out that once we got the tranny out and inspected it, the internals were shot. Had to have the entire thing rebuilt. They are dependable though...his had 217,000 miles on it before it finally quit working. I'd say you should look into having the tranny inspected.
My uncle changed the fluid in the transfer case -- there was near nothing in there to begin with. Unfortunately the problem persisted.
Anyone know where I could get an exploded view of the Mitsubishi transmission? He is looking to rebuilding it himself...Any good places on the web to get a rebuild kit from?
