Glow plug relay? Controller?

on a 99 7.3 psd is there a Glow plug relay and a Glow plug controller? I keep getting both options. One looks like a solenoid and the other looks like a heatsink with two plugs on the bottom.

I have found the one that looks like a solenoid but not the other. My buddy has one that looks like the other on his 6.0 (poor *******).

Thanks in advance!
Dale

There could be either depending on where the truck was destined to be sold. If it was originally sold in California, it has a glow plug control module( i think that is what it's called, if not originally set up for Cali, it will just have a relay.

California trucks had the GPCM and Federal trucks had the relay. You will have one or the other. This is assuming you have a L99 model truck.

If it is an E99 model truck, you will have a relay regardless of if it is California or Federal. The California model E99 trucks had a bridge that straps over the relay to monitor both banks of glow plugs. The Federal model E99 will just have the standard relay.

Would it have both if it were cali? I found the one in my truck on top of the valve cover that looks like the starter solenoid.

No. If you have a GPCM, and you see a relay next to it, the relay is for your AIH.

You just have a GPR and AIH no GPCM.

I went through the same thing with my Excursion. Unfortunately I had the GPCM. Had to pay the extra money. I recommend going to Rockauto.com for the best price. And search for a 5% off coupon they're all over the internet.

Use an OEM. The aftermarket ones don't last long. Clay at Riffraff diesel used to have OEM for about $50, which is way cheaper than the dealer.

The one I got from Rockauto was motorcraft. Is that considered aftermarket? Here is the one from Riff Raff if that helps...

Are you including Stancor in that statement?

No, OEM is OEM. It doesn't matter where you get it. It could be from ebay or anywhere.

Anything that isn't OEM is considered aftermarket.
