Hi every body this is my frist time posting anything and not sure im doing it right so just bear with me and sorry inadvance for anything. ok i just bought a 1993 ford 7.3 idi tubo and i was having a problum starting it, it would take like 5 to 10min to start so i did some research and found out it mite be my glow plugs not working. i lernd how to test them to see if they are bad and i did and found out they are all bad. but and this is my qustion when i was doing this i touched one of the glow plug wires to the block and it sparked. i was wondering if this is normal or not. and if not what could be causeing it? i was thinking it mite be the relay but not sure i need all the help i can get. thank you
Sounds like your glow plug relay is stuck, or the controller fried and is keeping the relay on.
I'd verify that the relay is on when it shouldn't be, by checking for voltage at the glow plugs. Assuming that's the case, disconnect the white wire from the relay. That wire is grounded by the controller to energize the relay. If the controller is keeping the relay on, this should open the relay. If the relay is stuck closed, there will still be power to the plugs.
Thank you so vary much i will try that tomarrow. and see what happens i hope this will solve my troubles. and just out of curiosity could there be somthig that mite also make my relay and contriler going bad?
If there's power to the plugs when the key is off, then it's almost certain that the relay is stuck on. This wouldn't mean the controller is good, however... A relay can go bad on it's own, or can go bad from a bad controller.
This is all assuming that it's a stock controller system...
As far as i know and can tell it is a stock contoller system. im just going by the pics iv seen online. the guy how had it before me didt do a good job with the wiering of the the plugs. im looking for a wiring harness on line but cant seem find one so im thinking of macking my own.
